Episode 18: Migration Madness, 2020
/

It’s finally that time of year again where the migrants are making their way up to our neck of the woods. Sean, Scott, and Heather talk about their experiences birding as this migration is starting to get into full swing. Sean updates us on his Local Big Year count, Heather and Scott lucked out with some warblers in their own front yard. Scott shares his mindful birding philosophy as we are unable to travel much further than our local patches. We also debate a bit about birding by ear, and when do you count a lifer.

In response to your question, I would ask, have you really ‘seen’ a bird if you haven’t heard it sing or call? Obviously I’m talking about birds that regularly vocalize, but is your Cerulean Warbler experience complete if it doesn’t sing? Or at least chip? I have birds on my life list that are heard only, like Yellow Rail and I’m ok with that. I’d like to see one, but chances are slim since there’s a picture of one beside the definition of skulker in my dictionary.

Keep on swearing in the free world guys.

    Pish and chips,

Thanks for your comment Neill! You’re right, part of the experience IS hearing the bird as well as seeing. Perhaps because I’m a very visual person I would be perfectly okay with not hearing a bird but seeing it. Although if the song was particularly noteworthy (ha!) I would be more inclined to want to both hear and see the bird.

      Thanks for listening!
      Heather
