Hello and welcome to Episode 19 of Fowl Mouths Podcast. We’ve got The Feminist Bird club roosting up in our Zoom and they’re here to smash the patriarchy and do some birding along the way. Founded in 2016 by Molly Adams, the Feminist Bird Club aims to be an inclusive birdwatching club that provides a safe opportunity to connect with the natural world while fundraising to protect the rights of black, indigenous, and people of color, LGBTQIA+ folks, and women. For this episode, we talked with Vice President of the Feminist Bird Club Martha Harbison and the Chapter Network Chair, Karla Noboa. You best put seatbelts on your ears folks, cuz we’re going to take them on the ride of their lives.

Martha Harbison: Martha has been birding for most of their life: First, with their parents in the flooded rice fields and natural wetlands of Northern California, and later in New York City when they needed a connection to nature. They are the Vice President of the Feminist Bird Club, and a member of the Galbatrosses, a team that “competes” in the World Series of Birding by only counting a species if team members definitively see a female bird. Follow Martha on Twitter.

Karla Noboa: Karla is a Boston based birder who discovered her true passion for birds when she realized it was the perfect form of active meditation. Birds were always around – as a kid at the many feeders in her Virginia backyard, and later in her ornithology classes and on the conservation lands she helped manage in Vermont. Karla is the Community Engagement Manager at River Network, the Chapter Network Chair on the Feminist Bird Club’s Board of Directors, and a volunteer nest watch monitor at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum. 1. Nick Florio says:

Respect and love to the FBC, but what’s up with the white dude slams? Isn’t the real beef with folks who aren’t playful/sociable/easygoing/respectful/modern?

And I appreciate white male dudes asking about joining first, and as a sort of white male I’ll adopt that practice, but isn’t the club for feminists? That’s a gender agnostic category, isn’t it?

I guess my feeling is, in the name of radical inclusion do you need to be exclusive? I feel like the language is radical, but also kind of lazy, and for strong prospective allies like me, kinda off-putting.
